DevOps Lead

We’re hiring a DevOps Lead to own the infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and operational excellence of our fintech platform. This is a senior leadership role: hands-on and strategic in equal measure. You’ll define how we build and ship software, and ensure our platform delivers the uptime, security, and auditability that regulators and customers expect.

This role is for someone who understands that, in financial services, a failed deployment isn’t just a technical problem; it can mean failed payments, regulatory exposure, and broken customer trust.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and own the DevOps roadmap aligned with engineering and business objectives.
  • Establish on-call rotations, incident response playbooks, escalation paths, and SLAs.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point during platform incidents and outages.
  • Build a blameless, learning-first engineering culture where post-mortems drive real change.

Infrastructure & Platform

  • Architect and operate highly available, multi-region infrastructure on AWS, supporting mission-critical financial workloads.
  • Manage Kubernetes clusters running microservices for payments processing, user authentication, transaction ledgers, notifications, and third-party integrations.
  • Design resilient failover and disaster recovery strategies targeting 99.95%+ uptime SLAs.
  • Own database infrastructure (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, Kafka) with a focus on data integrity, point-in-time recovery, and zero data-loss tolerances.
  • Lead infrastructure cost optimization, cloud spend governance, and capacity planning.
  • Manage integrations with external financial infrastructure payment gateways, banking APIs, card networks, and open banking providers.

CI/CD & Developer Experience

  • Own end-to-end CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD) that enable fast, safe, and auditable deployments to production.
  • Enforce GitOps workflows with full deployment history, approval gates, and rollback capabilities.
  • Standardize infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or Pulumi across all services and environments.
  • Reduce deployment friction: improve build times, test coverage gates, and environment parity between staging and production.
  • Define branching strategies, release management standards, and environment promotion policies.
  • Champion developer experience as a first-class concern across the engineering organization.

Security & Compliance

  • Own infrastructure security posture in alignment with PCI DSS, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and applicable regional regulations (GDPR, VARA, etc.).
  • Manage secrets, certificate lifecycles, KMS integrations, and access controls across all environments.
  • Implement zero-trust networking, mTLS, WAF, DDoS protection, and network segmentation for sensitive financial workloads.
  • Partner with the security and compliance teams on penetration testing, vulnerability management, and regulatory audits.
  • Maintain comprehensive audit logging, change management trails, and compliance reporting pipelines.
  • Enforce security review gates for all infrastructure changes before production deployment.
  • Support data residency and sovereignty requirements for international markets.

Observability & Incident Response

  • Build and own the full observability stack metrics (Prometheus, Datadog), logging (ELK, Loki), distributed tracing (Jaeger, Tempo), and intelligent alerting.
  • Define SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets for all critical services in collaboration with engineering leads.
  • Lead post-incident reviews with a focus on systemic fixes, not individual blame.
  • Build runbooks and response procedures for common failure scenarios: payment gateway outages, database failovers, and third-party API degradation.
  • Design on-call programs that maintain reliability without burning out engineers.

Fintech-Specific Operations

  • Manage infrastructure supporting core banking integrations, payment rails (ACH, SWIFT, SEPA, UPI, etc.), and card issuing/acquiring flows.
  • Ensure deployment processes meet change management requirements for regulated financial services.
  • Own environment controls that satisfy auditor requirements: access logging, change approvals, and data masking in non-production environments.
  • Work with the data engineering team on infrastructure for financial reporting, reconciliation, and analytics pipelines.
  • Support PCI-scoped environments with appropriate network isolation, logging, and access restrictions.
  • Maintain infrastructure readiness for regulatory examinations and third-party audits.

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience

  • 7+ years in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering.
  • 2+ years in a lead or principal-level role managing engineers and owning infrastructure strategy.
  • Prior experience in fintech, banking, payments, insurance, or another regulated financial environment strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams through major incidents, compliance audits, and platform scaling challenges.

Technical Skills

  • Deep expertise with at least one major cloud provider (AWS preferred) and multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud architectures.
  • Advanced Kubernetes administration: networking, RBAC, secrets management, autoscaling, and security hardening.
  • Strong infrastructure-as-code proficiency with Terraform, Pulumi, or CDK at production scale.
  • Solid CI/CD tooling experience: ArgoCD, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or equivalent.
  • Observability stack ownership at scale: Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of network security: TLS, VPNs, private endpoints, firewall policies, and zero-trust principles.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation: Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Experience with service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd) and internal developer platforms.
  • Familiarity with relational database operations, replication, failover, and backup strategies at scale.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Strong communicator who can translate infrastructure risk and compliance posture to non-technical stakeholders, including legal, finance, and executive leadership.
  • Calm and decisive incident commander: structured thinking under high pressure.
  • Experience building on-call programs, runbooks, and operational maturity frameworks.
  • Ability to influence across teams without direct authority.
  • Genuine interest in developer experience and engineering productivity.

Preferences

  • Experience operating in PCI DSS Level 1 or SOC 2 Type II certified environments.
  • Familiarity with open banking standards (PSD2, FDX, CDR).
  • Background in high-volume transaction processing systems or core banking platforms.
